Japan Live Cam: Yumoto Station

By JoshB on October 31, 2012

One of the ways to feel like you have been to Japan without even going there is to peruse the hundreds of live cameras around the country. In this series I will showcase some of my favorites.

To start out - this camera  is from Yumoto Station in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Yeah, the Same Fukushima that has the Nuclear Power Plant. It's a JR East line train on the Jōban Line.

From Wikipedia:

Exiting Yumoto Station, there are numerous small stores, including a convenience store called Wai Wai Shop, small souvenir shops, various snack bars and restaurants. There is also a foot onsen (ashi-yu, 足湯) outside and to the right of the station. The bus station is located right outside the station. Buses can take you around the general area of Yumoto and to Spa Resort Hawaiians. There are many onsen and ryokan (Japanese-style inns) located within a 10-15 walk of the station, including the famous Sahako-no-Yu (さはこの湯).

Exit the station and take the stairs over the railroad tracks, and there is Route 6, the main road that cuts through Iwaki City. Iwaki Coal and Fossil Museum (Sekitan-Kaseki-kan, 石炭化石館) is about a 10-15 minute walk from this stair case (in the direction of Taira). There are also buses here that can take you to other parts of Iwaki (Onahama and Taira).

The station first opened in 1897.

This camera is cool for a couple reasons. It's real-time streaming so you can see people and events live as they happen. You can also control the camera with various presets by clicking the numbered blue buttons on the left. Unfortunately there is no sound.

Neat! I will have to check this out at a later time, as it is midnight in Japan right now and I see is a single guy sitting on a bench.
