When May rolls around, the Hyatt Regency in Rosemont becomes the place for Otaku in the Midwest to gather. Another great Anime Central has come and gone.
Join me as I relive the journey through the pictures I snapped at the convention.
I was pretty impressed with the number of good costumes at this year's Anime Central. Here is a taste of some of the great costumes of Anime Central 2013.This picture I took because I found the concept of the costume intriguing; it's a fox girl holding the world. I was baffled as to what series this was from. Then all of a sudden it hit me, she is supposed to represent the Firefox web broswer! This costume is creative and cute, so she gets points for that!
Another cool costume! I have no idea what this one is from, nor did I end up figuring it out; still neat though.
If you needed to juice up your smartphone, the fine folks at Funimation had you covered with a charging station at their booth. Get it? It's a "charging" station. On the down side, your phone did end up spending several episodes in order reach full power, all the while it had a lengthy conversation with its rival.
It seems only fitting that Travis Touchdown, a king amongst otaku, made his appearance at Anime Central.
Coon and Friends, and Professor Chaos. It's is good to see these guys getting along again after they had a falling out.
Some more cool costumes... but I have not idea what these are from either.
A really good Mami from Puella Magi Madoka!
What is better than a Ghost in the Shell? Three Ghosts in the Shell: Makoto Kusanagi X3!
Also just as good, two Kusanagi's getting really friendly!
The Tachikomas try to figure out what this form of love between two members of the same sex means.
Good thing the Tachi-kuns did not see this instead: Catwoman and Harley Quinn playing a bit rough.
What would the Tachi-kuns think of I-no being fake-gropped?
Anywho, onto things less pervy. Let's check out some tokusatsu goodness. First up is everyones favorite pirate Super Sentai team: Kaizouku Sentai Gokaiger!!
And Ryuki, the original Madoka. There, I said it.
The Gokaiger were not the only pirates of the sky at the convention. Vyse and Aika from the awesome-tacular Skies of Arcadia also made an appearance at Acen.
Cosplay Break: There was an Itassha at the convention. This car was clad in scenes from the show Freezing.
After my encounter with the Itassha, I ran into my first Akibaranger Cosplayer, who took a a cue from one of the episodes of the show and made his Akiba Red cosplay himself.
Then at the Power Rangers/ Super Sentai/tokusatsus photo shoot, there were plenty more Akibaranger cosplayers.
There was some Powerful Rangers at the convention. Some people may know they as the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers
Spiderman was present at the toku photo shoot to snap some pics for his newspaper.
Awww. Nothing could spoil this perfect moment!
Or could it?! I can already read Peter Paker's headline for this developing story: Pink Ranger cheats on White Ranger with himself from the past!
There were some Kamen Rider cosplayers... but all in human form. I was hoping to see another Rider in henshin other than Ryuki.
Also present at the toku photo shoot were two Kings and a Souji.... they should make that into a sitcom... Just don't steal my idea.
All in all, it was a good turnout for fans of tokuatsus cosplay.
Next to the tokusatsu photoshoot there was some Moooortaaal Kooombaaat!! There was a couple of Scorpions, A Jade, a very good Sonia Blade, a Liu Kang, a Kitana and a couple of characters that I don't recognize, so I am going to go with Smokey the Bear and Raiden's baby-mama.
After the photo shoots, it was time to head back into the Hyatt.
Oh No!! Slenderman is hiding near the ice machine! Slowly walk away from him for your lives!
At the dealer room, one of the booths with the biggest presence was the Good Smile booth, where the company displayed many of its products behind glass.
I may not know much about the Good Smile products, but I want to say this one is not part of the Nendoroid line.
Now these I am pretty sure are Nendos, complete with Sold Out Hatsune Miku and Black Rock Shooter.
Okay back to the cospaly pics. There was quite a few Vocaloids at the con; including plenty of Hatsune Mikus!
Here we have Mami, Madoka and Homura from Puella Magi Madoka.
Ironically, when I snapped this pic I did not notice that Silvya is "playing" with Travis' light saber in the background.
Then I ran into another Akiba Red; this time in Akagi Nobuo form.
This cosplay is complete with goofy pose and Sasaki Ponpoko Delivery jacket!
Hanging out near the photo shoots was a Wreck-it Ralph, who was happy to point lost cosplayers in the right direction. Just because Ralph a bad guy doesn't mean Ralph a bad guy.
One of the final cosplay pics i snapped was of this super-badass Sanada Yukimura. Kudos to this cosplayer on his excellent work!
Also at the Con, was a Gosei Pink/ Power Rangers Megaforce Pink Ranger. Tensou! Change Goseiger!
Finally, there was a pretty cool Casshern costume.
While Fridays and Saturdays are usually the days that get the most attention in terms of programming, Anime Central decided to include an special event into the intnerary for Sunday. Yukino treated Sunday's convention-goers to a special acoustic concert!
Yukino concluded the concert with an acoustic rendition of RanTiKi, the intro for the show Bakumatsu Gijiden Roman by the legendary Monkey Punch. This acoustic version of the song was totally awesome! You can check out our review of the RanTiKi single here, and we will also be reviewing Yukino's first album "Vocalize" in the following weeks.
This great concert by one of Japan's up-and-coming new artists was a fitting end to an overall pretty solid convention! I can't wait for next year!
