4MINUTE: ACT. 7

By Paris365 on February 03, 2016

4MINUTE: ACT. 7

4Minute have returned and they've brought lots of HATE with them. But, in this case, hate is a good thing. A very, very good thing.

It's been a year since Crazy, but 4Minute is back and with a whole lot of attitude. Just give the single, "싫어(HATE)," one listen and you'll hear what I mean. "I hate you!" they exclaim during the hip-hop-laced chorus, dissing cheaters and liars, who, of course, bloody deserve it. If the dubstep/EDM parts of the song sound somewhat familiar, that's probably because the track was produced by none other than dubstep guru Skrillex.

Dal★Shabet: NATURALNESS (MINI-ALBUM VOL. 9)

If anyone gave up on Dalshabet following the recent exit of Ji Yul and Gae Eun. their new mini-album -- their 9th already -- should easily win them back.

LOVELYZ: LOVELINUS -1ST SINGLE ALBUM-

Lovelyz wasted no time after their hit single "Ah-Choo," as they're back already with a three song single album... and, yes, it's lovely. Mostly.

GIRLS' GENERATION - TTS (TaeTiSeo): Dear Santa - X-Mas Special - EP

Girls' Generation sub-unit TaeTiSeo return with their third mini-album -- and this time it's a festive Christmas release! Joy to the K-Pop world!

Girls' Generation sub-unit TaeTiSeo has returned, this time with a truly wonderful Christmas EP. The three member unit consists of Tae Yeon, Tiffany and Seo Hyun, the latter of which actually wrote the title track, which I think is pretty darn cool. Almost as cool as the temperature outside!

LONG:D: EP VOL. 1

By Paris365 on November 24, 2015

LONG:D: EP VOL. 1

LONG:D describe their sound on Facebook as such: "SF / Synthpop / ElectronicSoul / Babymakingmusic." I would tend to agree.

LONG:D is a duo consisting of 한민세 (Producer, Synth, DJ) and 민샥 (Vocal, Keyboard). They describe their sound on Facebook as such: "SF / Synthpop / ElectronicSoul / Babymakingmusic." I'm assuming that their name is short for Long Distance and that the SF stands for sci-fi. This would seem to make sense, since some of their music is nothing if not futuristic and at times it does sound like it's coming from somewhere far, far away. They could've had these guys score the new Star Wars movie.

D.HOLIC:머피와 샐리 [Murphy and Sally]

By Paris365 on November 20, 2015

D.HOLIC:머피와 샐리 [Murphy and Sally]

D.HOLIC provide perfect work out music with their contagious new single, "Murphy and Sally."

D.Holic's latest single, "머피와 샐리 [Murphy and Sally]" opens with snappy percussion and what sounds like lasers going off in a sci-fi movie. The percussion only grows snappier as it goes on and a sizzling, almost electro-clash style beat kicks in to accompany it. There are a whole lot of other sounds to entice you as well, "Murphy and Sally" being a perfect blend of K-Pop dance and electronica. "Never, ever give up," the girls sing (more times than you can count), starting in the beginning of the song and then as part of the chorus throughout it.

LEE HONG KI: FM302

By Paris365 on November 17, 2015

LEE HONG KI: FM302

I was expecting an EP full of ballads after reading the description on Yes Asia but most of the songs are actually catchy pop tracks with only a couple of ballads in the mix.

Following nine years in the band FTIsland, Lee Hong Ki is finally making his long-awaited solo debut with FM302, a mini-album named after his birthday: March 2nd.

f(x): 4 WALLS

f(x): 4 WALLS

The lovely young women known as f(x) are back with their highly anticipated fourth album, 4 WALLS. Check out our track-by-track review!

The four lovely young women known as f(x) are back with their highly anticipated fourth album, 4 WALLS. (Sulli left the group in August to focus on acting. But, fear not, remaining are Amber, Luna, Krystal and Victoria.) Surprisingly, the album is something of a departure for them, as several of the songs veer away from the electro-pop style they delivered to perfection on their first three albums, all of which rank among my favorite K-Pop albums of all-time.

DIA: 내 친구의 남자친구 [My Friend's Boyfriend]

By Paris365 on October 28, 2015

DIA: 내 친구의 남자친구 [My Friend's Boyfriend]

DIA's new single is a shiny pop diamond. Read all about it.

DIA is a popular new K-Pop girl group that debuted this year courtesy of MBK Entertainment. Their name has two meanings. First, it's short for "diamond". Second, it's an acronym for "Do It Amazing," which I put in caps since that is actually the title of their first song. I've seen the title of this new single translated as "My Friend is Boyfriend" but good old Wikipedia has a translation that makes more sense: "My Friend's Boyfriend." Regardless of what you call it, it's one heck of tune with its layers of sweet, colorful sounds, including some mighty peppy beats. Super, super catchy.

TAE YEON (OF GIRLS' GENERATION): MINI ALBUM VOL. 1 - I

By Paris365 on October 09, 2015

TAE YEON (OF GIRLS' GENERATION): MINI ALBUM VOL. 1 - I

Ballad addicts will get quite the fix with Taeyeon's solo debut, I. But if you're looking for SNSD style pop songs then you could very well end up disappointed.

Tae Yeon (or Taeyeon) is Girls' Generation's fearless leader and I is her much anticipated solo debut. Of course, she's done solo songs for soundtracks and compilations before, but this is being called her first official solo release. Was it worth the wait? Keep reading to find out...

I opens with the title track, which features Verbal Jint, delivering a rap verse at the beginning of the song. I'm assuming that he wrote his own lyrics for that part, but otherwise the song was written by Tae Yeon herself.

APRIL: MINI ALBUM VOL. 1 - DREAMING

APRIL are a new girl group founded by DSP Media, the agency of Rainbow and KARA, and signed to Loen Entertainment. Its members are Hyun Joo, Ye Na, Chae Won, Na Eun, Jin Sol and So Min. The mini-album opens with "꿈사탕" or "Dream Candy," which would seem to be a song about first crush kind of dreams. Here's a translation of part of the first verse: "Through the cotton candy clouds / Let’s walk along the stars / Aren’t you excited? / Can you believe this?" Just as on the cover of Dreaming, the girls look entirely innocent in the video, which is all flowers and unicorns. Literally.

Z.HERA: XOX

By Paris365 on September 08, 2015

Z.HERA: XOX

XOX is a fabulous mini-album and it proves that Z.Hera is a remarkable talent.

It's been a year since the now 19 years old, martial arts-trained Z.Hera -- born Ji He Ran -- released her last single, "D Island," but she's finally back with XOX, her highly addictive new mini-album. Fun fact I learned when I googled her before writing this review: she speaks Chinese, English and Japanese in addition to her native Korean.

FTISLAND: PUPPY

If ever there was a song that should not exist...

If ever there was a song that should not exist...

I've always been a fan of FTISLAND. Certainly my favorite K-Rock group. And while some of their songs have been catchier than others, I have never felt that they've released a truly awful song until now.

GIRLS' GENERATION: LION HEART - THE 5TH ALBUM

By Paris365 on August 20, 2015

GIRLS' GENERATION: LION HEART - THE 5TH ALBUM

It's finally here, Girls' Generation's long-awaited 5th album!!!

It's finally here, Girls' Generation's long-awaited 5th album. Hard to believe it's only their 5th though. They're always releasing so much music, juggling careers in Korea and Japan, that you'd think they were up to album number 8 by now. Not that getting up to number 5 is any small accomplishment. It's somewhat rare for a K-Pop act to release this many albums, so many artists here today and gone tomorrow. Seriously, some artists don't even get to make one album, maybe releasing two singles and a mini-album then vanishing.

GIRLS' GENERATION: "LION HEART"

By Paris365 on August 18, 2015

GIRLS' GENERATION: "LION HEART"

"Lion Heart" is the lead track from Girls' Generation's 5th album, half of which is being released today with the other half being released tomorrow.

"Lion Heart" is the lead track from Girls' Generation's soon to be released 5th album. This time around, they're trying something a bit different. On August 18th -- the day of this posting -- they're releasing six songs under the title Lion Heart. But tomorrow, the 19th, will see the final six of the album's twelve songs released under the title You Think. It seems more like two separate EPs to me but the tracks are not being released in order, so it's like you get six seemingly random pieces of the puzzle one day and then the other six the next day, completing the puzzle.

KOREAN MUSIC SINGLE SPOTLIGHT VOLUME ONE

By Paris365 on August 12, 2015

KOREAN MUSIC SINGLE SPOTLIGHT VOLUME ONE

New single reviews of Taesabiae, Kim So Jung, U Sung Eun, Min Yeol, Badkiz, Rica and Simba Zawadi.

Personally, I much prefer mini-albums and full-length albums over stand alone digital singles. But I guess they're a necessary evil, since they help new artists start building up a fanbase and keep fans of already popular artists thirsty for more in between bigger releases. Since these isolated singles have become so popular during the past couple of years, I thought I should write a review of a handful of those released recently, something I believe I've only done once before. I'll probably start doing it every few weeks now.

MAMAMOO: MINI ALBUM VOL. 2 - PINK FUNKY

By Paris365 on August 04, 2015

MAMAMOO: MINI ALBUM VOL. 2 - PINK FUNKY

Mamamoo is one of the busiest girl groups in the business of K-Pop. Their new mini-album, Pink Funky, is exceptional.

Mamamoo released their much-praised debut mini-album, Hello, last year and they've been very active ever since, collaborating with Bumkey, K.Will, Geeks, eSNa and Loco, this in addition to releasing various songs on soundtracks and competition releases. Suffice to say they're one of the busiest girl groups in the business of K-Pop.
