VIXX: ZELOS

By Paris365 on April 28, 2016

VIXX: ZELOS

VIXX's latest isn't as dark as I'd hoped for, but the songs are still plenty contagious.

Ladies and gentlemen, the members of VIXX have surrendered to the dark side. Well, at least for their latest single, which is named after the Greek God of Rivalry and Envy. Zelos is the first part of a year-long "large-scale project" they're doing called VIXX 2016 Conception, so, then again, maybe they will be evil all year. I'm hoping that proves to be the case because the three tunes here are all fantastic.

CNBLUE: BLUEMING

CNBLUE: BLUEMING

Spring is in the air and hearts are all fluttery -- two lessons you'll learn from CNBLUE's catchy new mini-album, their 6th vol.

CNBLUE: BLUEMING

CNBLUE are back with the brand new mini-album -- their 6th vol. -- entitled, what else, BLUEMING. To which end, you could certainly say that their new tunes are blooming, as they overflow with sun-drenched melodies and one infectious chorus after another. According to Yes Asia it's a "seasonal" release featuring "various sweet love songs," so if you're looking for a spring fling, this should get you in the mood, provided you can understand Korean. (Actually, the music has that vibe to the point that you should pick up on it even without comprehending the lyrics.)

LABOUM: FRESH ADVENTURE

By Paris365 on April 07, 2016

LABOUM: FRESH ADVENTURE

If you're looking for something that breaks the K-Pop mold you're not going to find it here. That said, the three songs on Fresh Adventure are fun nevertheless.

LABOUM's new mini-album opens with a 44 second intro consisting of lots of synth and dashes of electro, which fits perfectly with the opening song and lead single "상상더하기," which has been translated as "Imagine More." It's a sweet, danceable, spring-themed song that's sure to spread joy wherever you play it. Except maybe if you play it in a room full of metalheads; that would probably piss them off. But it would be hard to find a K-Pop fan whose face "Imagine More" wouldn't put a smile on.

LADIES' CODE: MYST3RY

By Paris365 on March 10, 2016

LADIES' CODE: MYST3RY

K-Poppers Ladies' Code are back with their first post-tragedy mini-album and all three songs are exquisite. A must-have for sure.

I don't read celebrity gossip and news sites much, but even I know the story of Ladies' Code's tragedy. Simply put, the reason why they are no longer a five member group is because two of their members are dead as a result of a horrific car accident on September 3, 2014. Immediately following the accident, EunB was declared dead on arrival by the time the paramedics reached the nearest medical center. RiSE's injuries were critical and she passed away in the hospital four days later. Today the group consists of the three remaining members, Ashley, Zuny and Sojung.

BRAVE GIRLS: "DEEPENED"

By Paris365 on March 07, 2016

BRAVE GIRLS: "DEEPENED"

In spite of line-up changes, the Brave Girls' latest offering, "Deepened," is classy, top notch R&B.

Brave Girls are the girl group produced by K-Pop songwriting masterminds the Brave Brothers. They've done pop, dance pop, R&B, ballads, etc, never settling on one sound for too long. If Wiki is correct, they currently have five new members along with original members Yoojin and Hyeran. I think I wanted to dislike this because I hate it when groups constantly have members leaving and new members joining. I lose faith in the rock bands I'm a fan of when that sort of thing happens, so it makes sense that I'd be frustrated with it happening to my favorite K-Pop groups.

AOA CREAM: 질투 나요 BABY [I'M JELLY BABY]

By Paris365 on February 16, 2016

AOA CREAM: 질투 나요 BABY [I'M JELLY BABY]

AOA sub-unit AOA CREAM have arrived with a formulaic first single, but damn if it's not catchy.

AOA Cream are an AOA (Ace of Angels) sub-unit consisting of Yuna, Hyejeong and Chanmi. "I'm Jelly Baby" -- that's its official English title -- is their debut single and it's been taking the K-Pop world by storm. Something that should come as no surprise to anyone who's heard it, as it's quite the pink and fluffy earworm. It wiggles its way inside of your head and stays there for hours. Initially, I wasn't sure that was such a good thing. The first time I listened to it I thought it sounded to plastic-y, if that makes any sense.

4MINUTE: ACT. 7

By Paris365 on February 03, 2016

4MINUTE: ACT. 7

4Minute have returned and they've brought lots of HATE with them. But, in this case, hate is a good thing. A very, very good thing.

It's been a year since Crazy, but 4Minute is back and with a whole lot of attitude. Just give the single, "싫어(HATE)," one listen and you'll hear what I mean. "I hate you!" they exclaim during the hip-hop-laced chorus, dissing cheaters and liars, who, of course, bloody deserve it. If the dubstep/EDM parts of the song sound somewhat familiar, that's probably because the track was produced by none other than dubstep guru Skrillex.

GIRLS' GENERATION - TTS (TaeTiSeo): Dear Santa - X-Mas Special - EP

Girls' Generation sub-unit TaeTiSeo return with their third mini-album -- and this time it's a festive Christmas release! Joy to the K-Pop world!

Girls' Generation sub-unit TaeTiSeo has returned, this time with a truly wonderful Christmas EP. The three member unit consists of Tae Yeon, Tiffany and Seo Hyun, the latter of which actually wrote the title track, which I think is pretty darn cool. Almost as cool as the temperature outside!

LONG:D: EP VOL. 1

By Paris365 on November 24, 2015

LONG:D: EP VOL. 1

LONG:D describe their sound on Facebook as such: "SF / Synthpop / ElectronicSoul / Babymakingmusic." I would tend to agree.

LONG:D is a duo consisting of 한민세 (Producer, Synth, DJ) and 민샥 (Vocal, Keyboard). They describe their sound on Facebook as such: "SF / Synthpop / ElectronicSoul / Babymakingmusic." I'm assuming that their name is short for Long Distance and that the SF stands for sci-fi. This would seem to make sense, since some of their music is nothing if not futuristic and at times it does sound like it's coming from somewhere far, far away. They could've had these guys score the new Star Wars movie.

D.HOLIC:머피와 샐리 [Murphy and Sally]

By Paris365 on November 20, 2015

D.HOLIC:머피와 샐리 [Murphy and Sally]

D.HOLIC provide perfect work out music with their contagious new single, "Murphy and Sally."

D.Holic's latest single, "머피와 샐리 [Murphy and Sally]" opens with snappy percussion and what sounds like lasers going off in a sci-fi movie. The percussion only grows snappier as it goes on and a sizzling, almost electro-clash style beat kicks in to accompany it. There are a whole lot of other sounds to entice you as well, "Murphy and Sally" being a perfect blend of K-Pop dance and electronica. "Never, ever give up," the girls sing (more times than you can count), starting in the beginning of the song and then as part of the chorus throughout it.

LEE HONG KI: FM302

By Paris365 on November 17, 2015

LEE HONG KI: FM302

I was expecting an EP full of ballads after reading the description on Yes Asia but most of the songs are actually catchy pop tracks with only a couple of ballads in the mix.

Following nine years in the band FTIsland, Lee Hong Ki is finally making his long-awaited solo debut with FM302, a mini-album named after his birthday: March 2nd.

f(x): 4 WALLS

The lovely young women known as f(x) are back with their highly anticipated fourth album, 4 WALLS. Check out our track-by-track review!

The four lovely young women known as f(x) are back with their highly anticipated fourth album, 4 WALLS. (Sulli left the group in August to focus on acting. But, fear not, remaining are Amber, Luna, Krystal and Victoria.) Surprisingly, the album is something of a departure for them, as several of the songs veer away from the electro-pop style they delivered to perfection on their first three albums, all of which rank among my favorite K-Pop albums of all-time.

DIA: 내 친구의 남자친구 [My Friend's Boyfriend]

By Paris365 on October 28, 2015

DIA: 내 친구의 남자친구 [My Friend's Boyfriend]

DIA's new single is a shiny pop diamond. Read all about it.

DIA is a popular new K-Pop girl group that debuted this year courtesy of MBK Entertainment. Their name has two meanings. First, it's short for "diamond". Second, it's an acronym for "Do It Amazing," which I put in caps since that is actually the title of their first song. I've seen the title of this new single translated as "My Friend is Boyfriend" but good old Wikipedia has a translation that makes more sense: "My Friend's Boyfriend." Regardless of what you call it, it's one heck of tune with its layers of sweet, colorful sounds, including some mighty peppy beats. Super, super catchy.

TAE YEON (OF GIRLS' GENERATION): MINI ALBUM VOL. 1 - I

By Paris365 on October 09, 2015

TAE YEON (OF GIRLS' GENERATION): MINI ALBUM VOL. 1 - I

Ballad addicts will get quite the fix with Taeyeon's solo debut, I. But if you're looking for SNSD style pop songs then you could very well end up disappointed.

Tae Yeon (or Taeyeon) is Girls' Generation's fearless leader and I is her much anticipated solo debut. Of course, she's done solo songs for soundtracks and compilations before, but this is being called her first official solo release. Was it worth the wait? Keep reading to find out...

I opens with the title track, which features Verbal Jint, delivering a rap verse at the beginning of the song. I'm assuming that he wrote his own lyrics for that part, but otherwise the song was written by Tae Yeon herself.
