Kotobukiya has kindly given me a sample figure of Hitagi Senjogahara from the anime Bakemonogatari (literally the combination of the words ghost and story). Never heard of it? Stop what you’re doing and go watch it; it’s a really great series from Studio SHAFT (who also animated one of my other favorite series, Hidamari Sketch). The anime, based on a series of light novels, tells the story of Koyomi Araragi, a highschooler who was bitten by a vampire and has been recently been cured of his vampirism (but some of it remains). Along the way he meets various girls who all have some paranormal affliction, the first being Hitagi Senjogahara. Hitagi is a lanky girl who also attends the same school as Araragi. She had an encounter with a crab god, who has stolen her weight.

The figure I’m reviewing is 1/8 scale and 8.4 inches. As usual, Kotobukiya’s sculpting talent is to be found all over this figure. From the hair all being blown in the wind to the pen in her pocket, the details are sharp and impressive. The face, while not overly expressive (she almost always has a deadpan expression in the show anyway), is still beautifully captured. In her hand is a stapler (which she uses on the inside of Koyomi’s mouth in the anime. OUCH!) The stapler can be removed from her hand. It’s VERY small, so be careful not to lose it. Her skirt is molded nicely with crisp folds. It may be possible to remove the skirt as I’ve seen in pics, but it’s too tough to separate her torso from the abdomen, and I don’t want to break it. Her panties have various stationary printed on them, such as staplers, scissors, and box cutters (yes, it’s shown in the anime too).

The stand is a simple clear base. Her one foot is actually screwed onto the base. I think this was done to prevent the figure from leaning, as PVC figures with standing poses have a tendency to lean due to gravity warping the figure’s posture over time. Between her legs is a clear ABS part of the crab god (but shown here as just amorphous tentacles). Printed all over it is kanji, I think for crab.

Overall, this is a wonderful figure. Whether you’re a fan of the anime or not, I think it’s worth getting for the overall look. Detail and craftsmanship are top notch quality. It’s a little expensive for its size, but I’ve seen it sold for as low as $55-$60 which is just right for a figure this size. Quite classy.
